OpenAI, funded by Microsoft, and its CEO, Sam Altman, and other members are being sued by Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly known as Twitter), and Tesla for abandoning the root cause on which the company was based, “To Be Beneficial for Humans.” Elon Musk, who is also the co-founder of OpenAI and served on its board of directors stepped down from OpenAI, Inc.s’ board in 2018 following an interview in which he stated

“Mark my words AI is far more dangerous than nukes”.

Musk filed the lawsuit on February 29th, Thursday, in San Francisco’s court. As stated by Musk’s lawyer, in 2015, Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman approached the tech tycoon and agreed to start a non-profit company to research artificial general intelligence for the “betterment of mankind.”

Musk’s lawyers filed a lawsuit to compel OpenAI to follow the Founding Agreement and revert to its objective of developing AGI for humanity’s good, rather than for the defendants’ gain.

The main takeaway from the lawsuit is that Elon Musk’s lawyer stated that

“OpenAI, Inc., despite its website claiming to benefit humanity, has been transformed into a closed-source subsidiary of Microsoft, according to a lawsuit filed by Musk’s lawyers. The lawyers argue that OpenAI’s focus on maximizing profits for Microsoft violates the agreement with the company.”
